Peripheral Neuropathy-this term is widely used because of the multitude of diseases associated with it,and the new medications that treat it
What it is-peripheral neuropathy occurs when nerves are compressed or damaged. Compession can occur when a disc in the spine presses on the nerve roots exiting ,or when a muscle squeezes a nerve as it passes through. Damaged nerves occur from infections, diseases like diabetes, or traumatic injuries
The pressure on the nerve can cause symptoms ranging form numbness,tingling or severe pain such as what occurs in sciatica Muscle weakness,sensitivity to touch and pain during activity are other symptoms.
Chiropractic care-the most important part of tretament is determining the underlying cause. If it is due to diabtetes then that needs to be addressed. If it is due to pressure from a muscle or bone different chiropractic techniques can be used for treatment such as muscle stimualtion,trigger point therapy to reduce inflammation, traction techniques to reduce nerve pressure and ultrasound therapy
